The 2017 season has been well underway for Devin Jones and the Barbarian monster truck as they’ve criss-crossed the country and even made a brief visit into Canada as a while participating in one of Monster Jam’s stadium tours against top level competition every weekend. Jones paired up with good friend Jamey Garner of the Over Bored monster truck for the six week stretch of events that started in Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium. The night started off well enough with Jones and Barbarian making the top eight in qualifying to make the racing bracket. In round one Jones would defeat El Toro Loco to move into the semi-finals before falling to eventual racing winner Son-uva Digger. Unfortunately mechanical gremlins would come into play during freestyle ending their performance early but an otherwise solid outing for the team. The next weekend would be a rough outing as mechanical problems once again struck and would sideline the Barbarian for the majority of the event in Orlando. From Orlando it was on to Toronto, Ontario for two events at the massive Rogers Centre for the third week of action. After a nightmare of a weekend in Orlando, Jones was able to find some much needed consistency in Toronto and was able to put together good performances in both the wheelie and freestyle competitions throughout the weekend.
Stop four of the tour brought the Barbarian back to the familiar surroundings of St. Louis, Missouri where Jones had competed just months earlier. It would be a memorable night for the team as Jones put together one of his best racing performances of his career. The night started with Jones making the racing bracket to face off with Wrecking Crew in round one. Jones would pick up the round win there to face off with teammate Over Bored in the semi-finals, where Jones would come out ahead over his good friend to move onto the finals to face Son-uva Digger. It would be a spectacular race with Jones losing rear steering during the race but still managing to pull off a victory against one of the sports strongest racers! They would wrap the night up with a solid freestyle to put a cap on their best night of the season.
After the great win in St. Louis it was off to the west as the Barbarian team headed to Anaheim, California’s Angel Stadium where they hoped to carry some good momentum from the week before. Jones was able to qualify in the top eight once again to make the racing bracket, but would be defeated by the always tough Monster Energy in round one. In freestyle it would be another good run from the Barbarian but not enough to compete for the win ending a solid night for Jones. The final stop of the tour would be Oakland, California where the season didn’t end quite the way Jones and the Barbarian would’ve hoped. A mechanical issue would keep the truck from making both the racing bracket and the wheelie competition to start the night, but Jones and company thrashed to get the truck back for freestyle and their efforts would be successful. Jones was able to put together another good freestyle after the necessary repairs were completed and put on a show for the fans in Oakland.
Overall it was an up and down first quarter, but a memorable one nonetheless as Devin Jones and the Barbarian gained new fans across the United States and into Canada. After a brief bit of downtime Jones and the Barbarian are ready to get back into action starting this coming weekend in Enid, Oklahoma.
